Canada is America’s NAFTA antagonist, not Mexico.

The trading relationship between the United States and Canada has been a topic of conversation since President Donald Trump met with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on February 13, 2017. The two leaders emphasized the importance of their strong trade relationship, despite the fact that there have been ups and downs over the years. While President Trump has been critical of Mexico and NAFTA, Canada has also been a target of NAFTA dispute claims, with almost all of them coming from U.S companies, surpassing those made against Mexico. Additionally, the U.S has accused Canada of “dumping” its lumber in the U.S market, which led to a tariff being imposed in 2002 and ultimately resolved in 2006. There are also steep tariffs on U.S imports of eggs, chicken, and milk in Canada that continue to irk some U.S dairy and poultry farmers. Experts argue that despite these disputes, the U.S- Canada trade relationship is still one of the strongest in the world and many agree that tearing up or renegotiating NAFTA could be detrimental to trade and economic growth.
