Broncos safety Kareem Jackson’s 4-game suspension for repeated unnecessary roughness violations

The NFL has handed down a significant disciplinary action against Denver Broncos safety Kareem Jackson. The league announced on Monday that Jackson will be suspended without pay for four games due to multiple violations of unnecessary roughness rules.

This suspension stems from an incident during Sunday’s game against the Green Bay Packers, where Jackson was disqualified after delivering a forceful hit to Packers tight end Luke Musgrave, who was considered a defenseless receiver. In addition to his ejection from the game, Jackson was penalized for a personal foul.

NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan addressed the issue in a letter to Jackson, stating, “On the play in question, you delivered a forceful blow to the head/neck area of a defenseless receiver, when you had the time and space to avoid such contact. You could have made contact with your opponent within the rules, yet you chose not to.”

This is not the first time Jackson has violated player safety-related rules this season. Runyan, who imposed the suspension, mentioned that Jackson has been penalized for personal fouls multiple times during the 2023 season, including a flagrant hit that resulted in his ejection from a Week 2 game against Washington.

According to insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero from NFL Network, sources indicate that Jackson is appealing the suspension. Pelissero also reported that Jackson had already been fined four times this season for illegal hits prior to Sunday’s incident.

This four-game suspension for violating a player-safety rule is one of the longest in recent years. The only longer suspensions were handed down to Vontaze Burfict (12 games) and Myles Garrett (six games) in 2019. Burfict was suspended for targeting, while Garrett was disciplined for unsportsmanlike conduct after swinging a helmet at Mason Rudolph.

If the appeal is unsuccessful, Jackson will be eligible to return to the Broncos’ active roster on Monday, Nov. 27, after the team’s game against the Browns in Week 12.
