A 51-year-old man charged with 16 felony counts of lewd acts with a child under 14 years old has been apprehended in Guatemala and extradited back to the U.S. The suspect, Santos Erasmo Garcia, also faces four felony counts of aggravated sexual assault on a minor and two felony counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child. He is set to be arraigned at the Southwest Justice Center. Garcia is being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional Facility in Banning on $22.1 million bail.
The investigation into Garcia began in April 2017 after deputies were alerted to alleged inappropriate acts involving the girl. Garcia fled to Guatemala after learning about the accusations. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
In collaboration with federal and local authorities, law enforcement personnel in Guatemala apprehended Garcia earlier this month without incident. He was then extradited back to the U.S. and taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies who transported him to the Banning jail.
The nature of the relationship between Garcia and the victim has not been disclosed, and further background information on the suspect is currently unavailable. According to court records, Garcia has no prior convictions in Riverside County.
