Breaking News: Shocking Incident as Police Use Taser on High School Band Director during Football Game

In an incident that has shocked the Birmingham, Alabama community, police officers resorted to using a stun gun to arrest a high school band director who allegedly refused to stop his band from playing. The unfortunate incident took place after a football game between Minor and Jackson-Olin high schools, and the whole ordeal was captured on camera, as reported by AL.com. According to the police, they had requested both school bands to stop playing as they were clearing spectators from the stadium. While the band from Jackson-Olin High complied, some members of the Minor High band, along with their band director, 39-year-old Johnny Mims, refused to stop playing. A video from a body camera shows Mims defiantly telling officers, “Get out of my face. This is our last song.” The situation escalated quickly after this exchange, leading to Mims’ arrest.

Moments after Mims and his band finished their song, the lights in the stadium went out. Chaos ensued, with spectators screaming, and Mims and others engaged in a heated argument beneath the bleachers, according to AL.com. The police stated that Mims not only ignored their orders but also physically assaulted an officer by shoving him and refused to comply with the arrest. In response, an officer deployed a stun gun, which struck Mims in the torso, causing him to fall to the ground. Shocked witnesses could be heard exclaiming, “In front of the kids?” and “Leave him alone. Stop!”

Mims was subsequently treated by paramedics, taken to a hospital, and then arrested. He now faces charges of misdemeanor disorderly conduct, harassment of a sports official, and resisting arrest, as reported by Law & Crime. After posting bail, Mims was released from Birmingham City Jail. Jefferson County Schools Superintendent Walter Gonsoulin released a statement urging the public not to jump to conclusions and announced that an investigation would be conducted. Meanwhile, Mims has been placed on administrative leave with pay pending further developments. His lawyers have vowed to fight for justice, claiming that his civil rights were violated in the incident.
