When Richard Harris passed away in 2002, the iconic role of Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films needed a worthy successor. Michael Gambon, the actor who breathed life into the character for six more movies, has now also left us. The 82-year-old Irish-born actor succumbed to pneumonia, as announced by his family, according to the BBC. Gambon had a prolific career spanning 60 years, earning four BAFTAs, three Olivier Awards, and nominations for two Emmys and a Tony. Notably, he was recognized for his performances in the theater, including the plays Path to War and Emma, as well as the play Skylight.
Gambon’s journey into acting began after studying to be an engineer. He debuted in theater with a production of Othello in Dublin and later secured a role in Laurence Olivier’s Hamlet at the National Theatre in 1963. He quickly gained prominence as a distinguished stage actor and rose to further fame with his role in the British TV series The Singing Detective in the mid-1980s. Gambon’s filmography boasts a diverse range of films, including The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover (1989), Layer Cake (2004), and The King’s Speech (2010), where he portrayed King George V.
However, it was Gambon’s portrayal of the beloved character Albus Dumbledore in the Harry Potter series that firmly established him in the hearts of American audiences. Interestingly, Gambon admitted that he had never read any of JK Rowling’s Harry Potter books. Nonetheless, he approached the role with meticulous preparation, relying on physicality to bring the character to life. In an interview with the New York Times, he shared that he focused on details such as a character’s appearance, hair, posture, and even the sensation of his feet on the stage. Gambon leaves behind his wife, Lady Gambon (also known as Ann Miller), and their son, as well as two sons from his extramarital affair with set designer Philippa Hart.
