The U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced on Thursday that Reynolds American Vuse Alto menthol e-cigarettes will be banned from sale. The FDA’s decision is based on the belief that the risk to children outweighs any potential benefits for adult smokers.
The ban includes three menthol-flavored and three mixed berry-flavored products, each available in three different nicotine strengths. The agency is still considering whether to allow Reynolds’ tobacco flavors to remain on the market.
Reynolds, the manufacturer of Camel and Newport cigarettes, argues that vape pens help adults quit smoking by switching to less harmful alternatives.
BAT, the parent company of Reynolds, intends to challenge the FDA’s ruling in court.
Kingsley Wheaton, BAT’s chief strategy and growth officer, stated, “We believe that properly regulated flavored vaping products, including menthol, are crucial in helping adult smokers transition away from traditional cigarettes,” in a recent press release.
Vape pens, which have been on the market for several years, have become increasingly popular among children and teenagers. A 2022 federal survey revealed that nearly 13% of middle and high school students who had vaped in the past 30 days preferred Vuse, making it the second most popular brand after Puff Bar.
Last year, the FDA ordered Juul Labs to cease the sale of its vaping products. However, the ban was temporarily suspended due to an ongoing appeal by Juul.
