Woman Meets Neighbors While Searching for Lost Emu in South Carolina
September 18, 2021
A woman’s quest to find her lost emu in South Carolina led to an unexpected encounter with her new neighbors. Barbara Kennedy, who recently relocated to Swansea, discovered that her 6-month-old emu named Bird Bird had escaped from their new home, which is also occupied by pigs, chickens, alpacas, horses, and geese. “He used to roam around the fence line, and I assumed he was fine. But when I checked an hour later, he had vanished,” Kennedy shared with WLTX-TV.
Kennedy conducted an extensive search for Big Bird for five days, using this opportunity to introduce herself to the locals, saying, “‘Hello, I have a big bird, where is he?'” However, luck came her way when her daughter posted about the missing emu on local Facebook pages and a neighbor reported a sighting on Sunday morning. Upon reaching the location, Kennedy found out that her generous neighbors had successfully confined Big Bird within their yard.
Determined to prevent any future escape, Kennedy plans to install a new fence to ensure Big Bird remains safely contained. It’s worth noting that this is not the first emu adventure we’ve heard about recently. Just last week, in Lakeville, Massachusetts, an emu managed to evade capture for over two weeks. The bird’s owners unfortunately had to abandon it while relocating, but Lakeville Animal Control eventually caught the emu and found it a new residence.
