According to a senior government source, non-essential staff at Canada’s embassy in Tel Aviv are being instructed to leave Israel due to escalating security concerns. It has been reported that some staff members are already following this directive, while those deemed essential will remain in place. Additionally, family members of diplomatic staff are also being directed to leave the country. This is a common practice in situations like this, and Canada is not alone in allowing non-essential personnel to depart.
The United States Department of State has also given clearance for non-emergency government personnel and eligible family members to leave Israel as the situation worsens. On October 7, deadly surprise attacks occurred, leading to increased violence and tensions in the region.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau addressed the ongoing situation in the House of Commons and informed that 10 Canadian flights, carrying a total of 1,300 Canadians, have departed from Israel. Furthermore, one bus has left the West Bank for Jordan. Trudeau called on Hamas to release hostages taken during their surprise attack and emphasized the need for unimpeded humanitarian access and corridor to provide essential aid to civilians in Gaza. Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly has stated that the establishment of a humanitarian corridor into Gaza is a main priority for Canada.
There are concerns that the violence could spread globally, as rallies supporting Palestinians in Gaza have been held across Canada and in other parts of the world. Trudeau condemned Hamas, a designated terrorist group in Canada, and stated that they do not represent Palestinians, Muslim or Arab communities. He added that Hamas only stands for increased suffering for Israeli and Palestinian civilians.
Trudeau affirmed Canada’s support for Israel’s right to defend itself but stressed the importance of conducting such defense in accordance with international law. He also mentioned the rising instances of antisemitism and Islamophobia and called on Canadians to embrace inclusive freedom as shared values. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre echoed Trudeau’s stance on Israel’s right to self-defense and condemned Hamas. He stressed that there can be no negotiation with Hamas and called on Israel to adhere to the rules of war during the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
NDP foreign affairs critic Heather McPherson highlighted how organizations like the United Nations view the situation in Gaza as a form of collective punishment. She emphasized the importance of international humanitarian law and called for a cease-fire, stating that there is no military solution to the conflict, only a political one.
