‘Boy Meets World’: Topanga’s Original Actress Claims She Was Terminated for Not Meeting Beauty Standards

“Boy Meets World” had nearly cast a different actress in the role of Topanga Lawrence. Bonnie Morgan, known for her role as Samara in “The Ring,” recently shared her experience on the “Pod Meets World” podcast, where she discussed how she initially landed the role and her subsequent dismissal from the show. Morgan revealed that she had gone through three callbacks, each time meeting with a room full of people. Interestingly, with each audition, she noticed that the script seemed to change slightly to incorporate things they had spoken about. This made her feel a strong connection to the character of Topanga, who had hippie parents, similar to her own upbringing where her mother grew kombucha mushrooms in their kitchen.

The name “Topanga” held significance for Morgan, as it was inspired by her parents’ love story. They got married in Topanga Canyon, which she considered to be incredibly cool. According to Morgan, her agent had informed her that the show’s creator, Michael Jacobs, loved her for the role. However, there was a power struggle behind the scenes, and she found herself caught in the middle of it.

On her first day on set, Morgan described feeling an odd atmosphere. The adults seemed distant towards her, and although the table read was enjoyable, things quickly took a turn for the worse. Ben Savage, who played Cory, began teasing and trying to break her during blocking. This made her increasingly nervous, to the point where she struggled to remember even the simplest details, such as Ben’s name and the opening line. Morgan shared an incident where the director, David Trainer, asked her to say a line sweeter, and then demanded her to say it like she was saying “happy birthday” while getting uncomfortably close to her. Despite her fear, she managed to comply with his request. Unfortunately, after her first day, Morgan was told that she was being fired because she wasn’t attractive enough for the role.

This news shattered her, as she found it difficult to believe that a grown man and a boss could lie about her lack of talent when the truth was that he simply didn’t find her pretty. Morgan’s agent immediately challenged this accusation, emphasizing that her ability to take direction had never been a problem. She expressed deep disappointment and said that very few adults would be able to handle such a blow. Morgan revealed that she only watched the pilot when it aired and didn’t follow the show afterward.

In the end, the role of Topanga went to Danielle Fishel, who played the character throughout the original series and the 2014 reboot, “Girl Meets World.” Fishel recently spoke up about being sexualized as a young actress on the show, admitting that she had desired to be seen as an adult and craved male attention. However, looking back, she recognizes that such attention was inappropriate and should never have been directed towards her at such a young age.

It’s important to note that representatives for ABC and Trainer have not yet responded to requests for comment regarding Morgan’s claims.
