A group of seven Conservative Members of Parliament (MPs) have publicly expressed their intention to vote against the report on Mr. Johnson. The MPs in question are Simon Clarke, Ms. Dorries, Brendan Clarke-Smith, Paul Bristow, James Duddridge, Mark Jenkinson, and Jacob Rees-Mogg.
The privileges committee determined that Mr. Johnson should have been aware that Covid rules were violated during six different gatherings. They further stated that any “reasonable” person would have come to the same conclusion.
The committee found that Mr. Johnson misled MPs in five different ways on at least four occasions, and that he had been “disingenuous” at times. They also questioned the basis of Mr. Johnson’s initial claim in the House of Commons that all rules and guidance were followed in No10, noting that only two media advisers provided assurances for a single event.
The committee also condemned Mr. Johnson’s strong criticism of the investigation, stating that it amounted to another “very serious contempt” and “an attack on our democratic institutions.”
The Telegraph has learned that the committee initially planned to propose a 40-day suspension for Mr. Johnson, but this was increased to 90 days after his resignation and subsequent attack.
One section of the report stated: “Mr. Johnson remains adamant in his belief that all the events he attended, and of which he had direct knowledge, were essential. However, this belief lacks a reasonable basis in the rules or the facts. A reasonable person examining the events and the rules would not hold the same belief as Mr. Johnson.”
