Boosting Our City’s Needs: Karen Bass, City Council Members Taking D.C. Trip for Advocacy

Los Angeles city leaders are set to travel to Washington D.C. on Sunday to engage with White House officials and advocate for additional resources to address the city’s most urgent needs.

Mayor Karen Bass, City Council President Paul Krekorian, and council members Bob Blumenfield, Eunisses Hernandez, Heather Hutt, Traci Park, and Hugo Soto-Martinez will meet with California’s congressional delegation and the Biden administration during their five-day trip. The primary focus of their discussions will be on bringing more unhoused individuals off the streets, improving public safety, securing more resources for veterans, enhancing transportation, and increasing access to federal funding.

“In just a few months, we have demonstrated that by joining forces, we can make things happen,” stated Mayor Bass last week. “Our partnership with the federal government has already yielded progress in various areas, from providing shelter for homeless residents to enhancing our transportation infrastructure.”

Mayor Bass added, “This delegation will maintain that momentum. I am grateful to my City Council colleagues for accompanying me on this trip, where we will amplify the voices of Angelenos on the national stage. Together, we will continue to bring about positive change for Los Angeles.”

As a result of their trip, the City Council has canceled its meetings for Tuesday and Wednesday. According to Krekorian’s office, the Council will resume its scheduled meetings on Friday.

During their visit, city leaders are expected to meet with Marcia Fudge, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. They will discuss requirements for rental assistance, including expanding housing voucher eligibility for veterans and securing more funding for affordable housing projects.

The group will also hold talks with Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, to request expedited reimbursements for COVID-related expenses and assistance with migrant buses from Texas.

Additionally, the delegation will meet with various White House officials, such as Denis McDonough, the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Julie Su, the Acting Secretary of the U.S. Department of Labor, and Tom Perez and Neera Tanden, who respectively serve as the director of intergovernmental affairs and director of the domestic policy council at the White House. Other meetings include discussions with officials from the Office of Management and Budget, the Office of Gun Violence Prevention, the Department of Transportation, and the Homeland Security Advisor.

Earlier this year, at the request of Mayor Bass and the City Council, members of Congress secured over $35 million in proposed fiscal year 2024 appropriation bills for Los Angeles.

The delegation also has scheduled meetings with various members of the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate to explore opportunities for further progress.
