Bonny Fire Almost Fully Contained, Full Containment Anticipated by Monday

The Bonny Fire, located southeast of Aguanga, is currently 90% contained as of Thursday, with full containment expected by Monday, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The containment percentage increased on Thursday at 7 a.m. and has been steadily rising throughout the week.

All mandatory evacuation orders related to the fire were lifted on Wednesday as firefighters continued to reinforce containment lines and address hot spots.

The fire has not spread beyond its perimeter, which spans 2,322 acres. The acreage increased slightly due to improved mapping techniques.

Firefighters are actively working on building containment lines, patrolling the fire area, and conducting suppression repair work.

The brush fire originated on the edge of the Cahuilla Indian Reservation last Thursday afternoon in the area of Bonny and Barber lanes.

Evacuation orders affecting properties north of the San Diego County line and south of Ramsey Road were lifted on Wednesday. However, evacuation warnings remain in effect for the area south of Bowers Road, north of Rim Rock Road, east of Bonny, and west of Chapman Road.

Crews from the Bonny Fire have been released to assist with brush fires in Sage and Cabazon.

The fire came dangerously close to Chapman and Johnston roads on Friday, leading to the deployment of air tankers and water-dropping helicopters to protect nearby homes. Some damage occurred, including the destruction of one outbuilding and a vehicle.

One firefighter sustained minor injuries over the weekend.

At its peak, around 2,000 personnel, including county engine and hand crews, as well as firefighters from various departments and agencies, were deployed to combat the fire. Additional support was provided by hot shot crews from Kern County.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
