BMW 5 Series Touring Renderings: Explore the Future of Wagon Design

Earlier this week, trademark filings revealed the design of the next-generation BMW 5 Series Touring wagon. While the grayscale photos lacked detail, they provided a glimpse into the overall styling of the variant, which closely resembles the 5 Series sedan unveiled in May.

Unofficial renderings have now breathed life into the trademark photos by adding color. These renderings showcase a sleek wagon in the M Performance guise, featuring sportier bumpers and appropriate badging.

The most notable difference in the wagon renderings lies in its bumpers. The front fascia displays prominent black trim around the lower grille opening, which is more pronounced in the M Performance variant. Additionally, the outboard intakes are adorned with glossy black trim accents.

At the rear, a sporty bumper appliqué features triangular-shaped rear marker lights, reminiscent of the M Performance-badged sedan. The wagon is equipped with a lowered suspension, indicating its sportier nature, and is likely larger than its predecessor. The 5 Series sedan grew by 3.4 inches in length and 1.3 inches in width, which should only enhance the wagon’s cargo capacity.

BMW plans to offer a wide range of powertrain options for the 5 Series. The entry-level 530i sedan in the US boasts a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, producing 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. The 540i, available exclusively with all-wheel drive, features the brand’s straight-six engine, generating 375 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.

We can expect BMW to offer a high-performance M variant of the 5 Series Touring as well. Our spy photographers have captured images of it being tested at the Nurburgring. While specific powertrain details remain unknown, all indications point towards it borrowing the hybrid powertrain from the XM SUV. This electrified V8 produces a staggering 735 hp and 737 lb-ft of torque, and the wagon is expected to deliver 718 hp.

We anticipate the next-generation BMW 5 Series Touring to make its debut before the end of the year. However, it wouldn’t surprise us if the official unveiling was delayed until early 2024. Additionally, we may have to wait for the hotter M5 Touring to be introduced, as BMW typically staggers the release of new models and variants.
