Blue Jays game welcomes and swears in nine new citizens

TORONTO – Robert Rohr’s first day as a Canadian citizen left him in awe, and it will take him a while to process the experience.

Rohr, along with eight others, became Canadian citizens on Saturday during pre-game festivities at Rogers Centre, in front of a crowd of over 40,000 baseball fans. The Blue Jays’ Canada Day celebrations featured a citizenship ceremony before their game against the Boston Red Sox, which they unfortunately lost 7-6.

Reflecting on the occasion, Rohr said, “I’ll probably go home and wake up in the middle of the night sweating and be like, ‘What the heck just happened?’ It’s absolutely amazing.”

“It’s an incredible honor to be invited here to do this,” he added.

Wearing red Blue Jays jerseys, Rohr and his new friends stood before the ballpark’s mound. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser administered their oath of citizenship, with two judges as witnesses.

Following the ceremony, the newly sworn-in citizens lined up with the Blue Jays along the third-base line for the national anthems. The Royal Canadian Navy members unfurled a large Canadian flag in the outfield, and the citizenship became official as they sang “O Canada” alongside the 41,813 fans in attendance.
