Rachel Lee, now 33, opens up for the first time about her role as the ringleader of the notorious Bling Ring in the captivating Max documentary, “The Ringleader: The Case of the Bling Ring.” This group of LA teenagers embarked on a Hollywood crime spree from October 2008 to August 2009, robbing celebrities such as Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, Megan Fox, Brian Austin Green, and Orlando Bloom, netting over $3 million in luxury goods including Louis Vuitton luggage, Rolexes, and handguns. Lee, who was 19 and under the influence of Xanax at the time, recalls the thrill and allure of these criminal endeavors.

In the documentary, Lee shares the details of their last adrenaline-filled heist in which they stole $130,000 worth of clothing, jewelry, and personal items from Lohan’s home in the Hollywood Hills. Despite being aware of the police’s surveillance of them and the mounting risk of being caught, Lee’s addiction to the excitement and rush of getting away with it was insatiable.

Lee’s involvement in the Bling Ring remained a secret until now. One of her friends, Alexis Neiers, betrayed her and another member of the group, Nick Prugo, by anonymously tipping off the police. The subsequent arrests of Prugo, Diana Tamayo, and Courtney Ames sent shockwaves through the group. The Bling Ring had even burglarized Paris Hilton’s home multiple times due to their admiration of her romantic involvement with Brian Austin Green.

During a heartfelt conversation with Prugo following their theft at Lohan’s house, Lee remembers expressing her concern about their actions and their inevitable consequences. She promised her loyalty and support to him, but soon after, she received a call from Prugo asking for her father’s address in Las Vegas where she was staying. It was then that Lee’s world came crashing down as the police stormed her father’s home, revealing her complicity in the crimes.

Lee believed she had effectively disposed of any incriminating evidence, but the discovery of Lohan’s coat and topless photos of Hilton caused her to break down in despair. The police considered it as the final piece of evidence needed to make their case against her. Lee vividly recalls the detective’s statement, “This is a game of musical chairs, and we’ve already talked to all your friends, and you’re the only one without a chair.”

Ultimately, some members of the Bling Ring served time for their involvement, others received probation, and Lee herself was sentenced to four years in a California state prison. However, this incarceration became a turning point for her. Lee achieved sobriety during her time in prison and obtained her cosmetology license upon release. She now works at a hair salon, reflecting on her past with a newfound perspective and a deep desire for a fresh start.
