President Biden had a conversation with Prime Minister of Israel on Sunday, according to a statement from the White House. The focus of their discussion was on the situation in Gaza and the surrounding region. They also addressed the recent release of two American hostages who were freed by Hamas on Friday.
This phone call took place as the United Nations allowed 14 trucks carrying humanitarian aid to enter Gaza. It occurred one day after the first trucks carrying aid were permitted into Gaza from Egypt. These actions were taken to address the dire humanitarian crisis caused by Israel’s closure of the strip following a violent incident involving Hamas fighters on October 7.
The White House statement confirmed that there will be a continuous flow of critical aid into Gaza. President Biden expressed his gratitude to Israel for their assistance in securing the release of an American woman and her teenage daughter. These individuals, who hold dual Israeli-American citizenship, were the first captives to be freed by Hamas.
The readout also mentioned that Mr. Biden and Prime Minister Netanyahu discussed ongoing efforts to secure the release of all remaining hostages, including U.S. citizens. They also talked about facilitating the safe departure of American citizens and other civilians in Gaza who wish to leave. The call concluded with an agreement to maintain close communication between the President and the Prime Minister.
In addition to the call with Prime Minister Netanyahu, President Biden discussed the Israel-Hamas conflict with several world leaders including Pope Francis, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada, President Emmanuel Macron of France, Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy, and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak of the United Kingdom, as reported by the White House.
