Beware! The Covid Inquiry Raises Concerns about Contracting Covid-19
Officials from the Covid-19 public inquiry have expressed fears that attendees of its hearings could potentially contract the coronavirus, according to the recently released guidelines. In a document published on the inquiry’s website, it strongly urges all staff and visitors to undergo a lateral flow test before attending any sessions. Additionally, individuals have been granted the option to wear masks if they feel more comfortable doing so.
The Covid Inquiry is set to commence its public hearings today, featuring a poignant film showcasing testimonies from bereaved families. Opening statements from lawyers representing core participants will also be heard, with the introduction of expert evidence scheduled for tomorrow. Over the course of the next six weeks, the inquiry will meticulously analyze the UK’s preparedness and resilience in the face of the pandemic, delving into various factors such as government decision-making, vaccine distribution, and the care sector.
It’s worth noting that the document published on the inquiry’s website strongly advises all staff and visitors to undergo a lateral flow test before attending sessions. Given that the inquiry is not expected to conclude until 2026, it is the first in the UK to progress to public hearings with testimonies from witnesses, while several other inquiries have already begun worldwide. However, there is concern regarding the potential testimony of members from the Independent SAGE group of scientists, known for advocating stricter lockdown measures.
Tory MP Marco Longhi argues, “Independent SAGE didn’t, and still don’t, have any mandate. Everybody is an expert these days, and it’s obvious there are polarized views across the spectrum of opinions.”
To ensure the safety of all attendees, a series of measures have been implemented to minimize the risk of Covid-19 transmission in the inquiry’s initial module located at Dorland House in Paddington, West London. These measures include the provision of sanitizing stations, along with readily available antiviral wipes throughout the venue.
Commons Leader Penny Mordaunt emphasizes the significance of the inquiry in safeguarding the resilience of the country, stating, “What people will see is some pretty heroic activity in Whitehall and among some politicians too.”
