The highly anticipated debut of Harry Kane for Bayern Munich took place during the Super Cup final in Munich on Saturday, where his new team suffered a devastating 3-0 defeat against RB Leipzig, the German Cup winners.
Despite entering the game as a substitute in the second half to a thunderous applause from the fans at the Allianz Arena, Kane’s efforts were not enough to secure a victory for the club in their season opener.
RB Leipzig emerged victorious in the Super Cup, with Dani Olmo scoring a remarkable hat trick, marking the team’s first-ever triumph in the competition.
Kane’s debut for Bayern Munich took place just hours after he announced his departure from his long-standing club, Tottenham Hotspur. The forward signed a reported $126 million transfer deal with Bayern Munich, bidding farewell to the club he had been with for the past 19 years.
Despite being Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer, with an impressive record of 280 goals in 435 appearances across all competitions, Kane was unable to secure a major trophy for the club during his tenure.
Kane explained his decision to leave the club a day before Tottenham’s first game of the season, stating, “I felt like this was the right time to move on. I didn’t want lingering uncertainties about my future heading into the new season.”
In a heartfelt video shared on his official social media accounts, Kane expressed gratitude towards his teammates, coaches, managers, and the Tottenham fans, stating, “I have given my absolute best to make you proud.”
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy acknowledged Kane’s departure but left the door open for a future return, saying, “He will always be welcomed back. He is a cherished and esteemed member of the Spurs family, forever ingrained in our history.”
Levy further stated, “Harry made it clear that he wanted a new challenge and would not be signing a new contract this summer. Reluctantly, we agreed to his transfer.”
