This troop of baboons found themselves trapped several feet above the ground, encircled by lions. Stranded with no escape, the baboons resorted to clinging onto the bridge!

Mike Botes, a guide at MalaMala Game Reserve in South Africa, managed to capture this intriguing and amusing behavior on video. He shared the story and footage with LatestSightings.com.

The West Street Bridge is a renowned structure situated in the heart of the MalaMala concession that provides guides and visitors a secure route across the Sand River during the wet season. Sightings on and around the bridge always offer unique perspectives for photography.

“During our game drive, we followed the Kambula pride of lions and their pride males, the Ndhzenga males. It seemed like they were heading towards the Sand River, possibly in search of water. However, it soon became clear that their intention was not to drink but rather to cross the Sand River. They were making their way straight to the West Street Bridge.”

Baboons are particularly fond of the bridge as it offers them an elevated vantage point to watch out for any potential threats. Guests at MalaMala are often greeted by these primates engaging in their playful activities, such as grooming themselves and playing games on the bridge.

“On this specific day, a troop of baboons were basking in the morning sun on the bridge. Unfortunately, they became so engrossed in the warmth that they failed to notice the approaching lions. Realizing what was happening, I quickly maneuvered to the side and observed from below.”

“The lions casually strolled onto the bridge, seemingly unconcerned. Meanwhile, the baboons let out cries of alarm, alerting every creature in the vicinity. It was chaos as the baboons scrambled. Trapped and unable to outrun the lions, they had to think on their feet to survive.”

“To our astonishment, the baboons darted under the bridge! Yes, underneath the bridge. Clinging onto the metal bars below, they knew they were safe. Feeling confident in their inaccessibility, the baboons even started provoking the lions. They were literally right under the lions’ noses, yet the lions were powerless.”

Sometimes, the African bush presents sightings that are both enlightening and traumatic, but on days like these, it can also surprise you and leave you in fits of laughter.
