Los Angeles County health officials have issued a recommendation for individuals who consumed food or beverages at a Panda Express in Lancaster between July 21 and Aug. 4. They are advised to receive a vaccination against hepatitis A. This warning follows the identification of a hepatitis A virus infection in a food handler who worked at the restaurant located at 44411 Valley Central Way in Lancaster, as reported by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
As of now, no additional cases have been reported. Hepatitis A is a liver infection caused by the hepatitis A virus and is highly contagious. It can be transmitted through the fecal-oral route, where contaminated feces from an infected person are ingested by another person during close personal contact. It can also be contracted by consuming contaminated food or water.
Symptoms of acute hepatitis A in adults may include fever, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, dark colored urine, and jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes). The severity of symptoms varies.
Hepatitis A vaccinations are available at some local pharmacies or physicians’ offices. The county health department will also provide free vaccinations for individuals who were exposed at the Antelope Valley Health Center, located at 335 E. Ave. K. Vaccinations will be offered between 12:30 and 4:30 p.m. on Monday and between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday.
While prompt vaccination is likely to prevent infection, it is important to note that an infection may still occur in individuals who are vaccinated too late. The vaccination is not necessary for individuals who have previously completed the hepatitis A vaccine or have had a past infection.
