Australians can swab themselves for Covid-19 at home after scientists finally approve three tests

  • Rapid antigen tests have been used extensively in countries around the world
  • They have finally been approved for use at home in Australia from November 1
  • States and territories will decide how residents can use the tests

Australia’s drug regulator has finally approved three Covid-19 rapid antigen tests for use at home from November 1.

Two of tests are oral fluid tests which involve spitting into a plastic tube and testing the saliva and the other is a nasal swab.

They take as little as 15 minutes to provide a result. If a positive result is returned then the user will be expected to get a traditional PCR test from a testing clinic to confirm the result.

The tests have been used extensively in countries around the world including the US and the UK for more than a year.

Health Minister Greg Hunt announced a plan to approve home tests last month.

‘This is an important additional protection for Australians, home testing to support Australians and the national plan,’ he said.

It will be up to states and territories to decide how residents can get hold of the tests.
