Australian Study Finds Garlic Varieties Effective Against Covid-19 and Flu
- Garlic varieties ‘reduce infectiousness’ by up to 99%, according to researchers
- 18 months of in-vitro tests using garlic against Covid-19 and flu
- However, experts warn against relying on ‘home remedies’
A groundbreaking study from Melbourne’s Doherty Institute has revealed that Australian-grown garlic may be a potent weapon against Covid-19 and the flu.
Researchers discovered that certain varieties of garlic can reduce the infectiousness of these viruses by up to 99%. The study involved 18 months of in-vitro testing against SARS-CoV-2 and influenza type A viruses.
Julie McAuley, a researcher from the institute, stated, “We could barely detect any remaining virus genome, indicating nearly complete virucidal [virus-destroying] activity.”
Australian Garlic Producers, which commissioned the study, is now working on commercializing the most effective garlic varieties and their extracted ingredients. The novel garlic extraction process has already been submitted for an international patent.

Nick Diamantopoulos, the CEO of Australian Garlic Producers, emphasized the importance of their research, stating, “Our extensive research has shown that garlic varieties differ not only in their agronomic and physiological properties but also in their biochemical properties. This detailed analysis has led to the identification of unique and superior garlic varieties.”
The Doherty Institute’s business development director, Martin Elhay, expressed support for the study’s findings and the institute’s commitment to fighting Covid-19 on a global scale.
It’s worth noting that previously, health authorities dismissed claims of garlic’s effectiveness against Covid-19 as a myth. However, with these new findings, the potential benefits of garlic in fighting the virus cannot be ignored.
