With the winter flu season in full swing and COVID-19 surging, parents are being urged to vaccinate their children before the school holidays.
Michael Bonning, President of AMA NSW, warns that infection rates for both COVID-19 and flu remain high.
Reported flu cases in NSW have more than doubled in the past five weeks, increasing from 32,000 at the end of April to over 68,000 cases last week.
Parents are being urged to get their children vaccinated before heading off on school holidays.
According to Dr. Bonning, “Children under 10 are getting infected at much higher rates than other age groups, and more than 300 children under 16 have been admitted to the hospital.” He further adds, “We can alleviate the pressure on the health system by ensuring that as many people as possible receive their flu shots, particularly older individuals and other vulnerable groups.”
This includes school kids during holiday times when families travel to visit extended family, friends, or seek warmer weather.
For those planning to travel during the winter school holiday period in NSW, which starts on July 3, it is recommended to get vaccinated before leaving home.
The AMA also advises people to wear masks, especially in crowded places like sporting venues, concert halls, airports, railway stations, public transport, shopping centres, supermarkets, and playgrounds.
