At Least 14 Injured in Halloween Shooting

At least 14 people, including three children, were injured in a drive-by shooting in Chicago’s Garfield Park neighborhood on Halloween night, police said. The youngest victims are a 3-year-old, an 11-year-old, and a teenager who may be 13 years old, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown said, per the AP. The 3-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to both legs, according to a release. All three juveniles are listed in serious condition. The others wounded by gunfire are adults ranging in age from their 30s to their 50s, two of whom are listed in critical condition. One person was struck by a car and is listed in fair condition. No fatalities were immediately reported.

Brown said the shooting happened around 9:30pm at the corner of California Avenue and Polk Street and was over in a matter of seconds. It was captured on police surveillance video, which investigators are reviewing. Preliminary information indicates there were at least two shooters seen on the video, firing indiscriminately into the crowd. Investigators are trying to determine a motive and get a description of those responsible, Brown said. They were traveling in a dark SUV. Brown said there were several large groups at the corner, a popular neighborhood gathering spot, and some were reportedly attending a vigil. It was one of at least eight mass shootings in the US from Friday to Monday, per the Washington Post.
