Art Colleges Across UK Shut Down: Outrage as Civic Pride Symbol Buildings Disappear

Artist and academic Matthew Cornford embarked on a nostalgic journey to his old art school in 2009, only to find it deserted and dilapidated. This experience inspired him to investigate the history of art schools in the UK, along with his friend John Beck, a professor of modern literature. Their project, called the Art School Project, aims to document and archive the old art school buildings throughout the country. They have already explored institutions in the north-west and the West Midlands and are now showcasing their work on the East Midlands. The project serves as a reminder of the disappearing regional art schools that have played a crucial role in nurturing budding artists. These schools were once part of the town infrastructure and served as accessible entry points for aspiring artists. However, many of them have either closed down or merged with larger institutions. The Art School Project aims to create a national record of these forgotten places and their historical significance.
