In the realm of contemporary classical music, Danish composer Hans Abrahamsen gained international recognition with his captivating and introspective song cycle “Let me tell you” ten years ago. Now at 70 years old, Abrahamsen has composed a wealth of music, both prior to and subsequent to his breakthrough, providing ample opportunities for further exploration.

This album brings together two substantial orchestral works: “Left, alone” (2015), essentially a piano concerto, and “Ten Sinfonias” (2010), both recorded live with the esteemed WDR Sinfonieorchester in Cologne. Additionally, the album features a shorter piece for brass and percussion called “Two Pieces in Slow Time” (1999).

Abrahamsen could be considered a miniaturist in the vein of many contemporary composers, with his most memorable moments occurring when he focuses on intricate motifs or combinations of sounds. He also exhibits a deep fascination with fairy tales and the cold embrace of winter, themes that harmoniously melded together in his recent opera, “The Snow Queen”.

These distinguishing qualities are also present in this album. “Left, alone” consists of six miniature movements. The title does not refer to loneliness, but rather a piano solo specifically composed for the left hand only, which reflects Abrahamsen’s own physical limitation in his right hand. The music traverses diverse terrains of mystery and occasional danger, culminating in a magical fairytale kingdom at the end, beautifully interpreted by soloist Tamara Stefanovich.

“Ten Sinfonias” traces its origin back to a string quartet dating back to 1973. The orchestration of this piece, following a Baroque ensemble structure, may not seem to add much to its depth. However, it is an engrossing collection of miniatures that are shrouded in enchantment and enigma.
