An Alabama State football player has been suspended after slapping a security guard who tried to stop him from confronting a fan in the stands, according to reports.
Footage shared on social media shows the player, identified as wide receiver Jacob Freeman by Alabama.com, becoming agitated with a fan during Alabama State’s game against Florida A&M on September 23.
As the security guard attempts to hold Freeman back, Freeman allegedly slaps him in the face.
The shocked security guard covers his mouth and confronts Freeman, who is restrained by one of his coaches.
Alabama State players rush to the scene and exchange words with fans in the same section where the incident occurred.
Freeman was arrested by the FAMU Police Department and charged with “battery causing bodily harm,” according to TMZ.
He has since been released.
Dr. Jason Cable, Alabama State University Athletic Director, condemned the incident and announced that the player, without mentioning Freeman by name, has been “suspended indefinitely.”
“We are aware of the incident that occurred last night after our game against Florida A&M University in Tallahassee involving an Alabama State University football student-athlete,” Alabama.com reported.
“We do not condone the actions of the student-athlete, and they do not represent the expectations set by the Athletic Department and our University. There is zero tolerance for this behavior. The student-athlete has been suspended indefinitely from the football program, effective immediately.”
Following the game, Alabama State removed Freeman’s profile from its website.
Freeman transferred to Alabama State from the Georgia State Panthers in February.
The viral video of the incident has received over one million views, and social media users have criticized Freeman for his actions.
“Kick him off the team!!!,” one user commented on the original video posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“He should be suspended and removed from the team!” another viewer stated.
“They lost 23-10 and now he wants to fight,” one person joked.
“If I were him, I would press charges and sue the university!!!! This video would win you a lawsuit…” a person suggested that the security guard sue.
Alabama State, currently 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play, is scheduled to play the winless Alcorn Braves at home on Saturday, September 30.
