Addressing Russia’s Deteriorating Human Rights Situation: UN Human Rights Body Extends Mandate for Russia Expert

In a significant development, the top human rights body of the United Nations has agreed to extend the term of an independent expert who has been diligently reporting on the worsening human rights conditions in Russia. This deterioration occurred due to President Vladimir Putin’s aggressive actions during the war on Ukraine which started last year.

The Human Rights Council’s decision to renew the mandate of the independent U.N. special rapporteur on Russia received 18 votes in favor, 7 votes against, and 22 abstentions. This extension is valid for a duration of one year.

The voting outcome, which witnessed a substantial number of abstentions, comes just days after Russia’s bid to rejoin the council was rejected by the U.N. General Assembly. Russia’s membership had been suspended following its military invasion of Ukraine.

Just last month, Mariana Katzarova, the rapporteur, released her initial report expressing grave concerns about the significant deterioration of human rights in Russia since Putin launched the war against Ukraine in February last year.

Furthermore, a separate investigation conducted by U.N.-backed investigators focusing on rights abuses related to the Ukraine conflict has explicitly accused Russia of committing war crimes.
