Fitness experts are astounded by Aaron Rodgers’ speedy recovery from a torn Achilles, describing it as “much faster than expected.” There is even speculation that Rodgers may return to football before the end of the season.
The New York Jets quarterback suffered the Achilles tear during his debut on September 11, an injury that typically takes up to a year to heal. At the time, his NFL career seemed to be in jeopardy, and it appeared unlikely that he would be able to play again until next year.
However, given his age (39) and the severity of his injury, Rodgers has made incredible progress in his recovery. He has already been seen walking without assistance and throwing the ball with his teammates.
In most cases, patients with an Achilles tear rely on crutches for at least eight weeks before they can put weight on the injured leg. However, Rodgers had a minimally invasive procedure known as a speed bridge, which is rarely performed. This innovative surgery involves creating a small incision and implanting a device to anchor the torn tendon securely to the heel bone.
Dr. John Gallucci, Jr., CEO of JAG Physical Therapy, says Rodgers’ progress has exceeded expectations: “He is doing awesome. He has moved the timeline up dramatically compared to a normal Achilles repair.” Dr. Michael Sganga, a foot and ankle surgeon, adds that the speed bridge procedure allows for quicker rehabilitation due to the smaller incisions and faster healing of the skin.
In addition to the surgery, Rodgers’ healthy lifestyle choices may have contributed to his accelerated recovery. He follows a mostly vegan, ancestral diet, and has spoken about the benefits of hallucinogenic tea for stress relief.
While both doctors caution that it’s still too early to determine if Rodgers will return to the field this season, they agree that his progress is remarkable. Dr. Gallucci believes Rodgers has a good chance of defying the odds: “I think anything is possible. His recovery is much faster than expected and much faster than the majority of people with an Achilles rupture.”
Time will tell if Rodgers can make a full comeback by the end of the football season, but his current progress is undeniably ahead of schedule.
