A Final Adventure: Experiencing Six Flags Great Escape’s Alpine Bobsled for the Last Time

QUEENSBURY — After a 25-year run at Great Escape, the Alpine Bobsled took its final glide down the half-pipe before being retired on Monday. Roller coaster enthusiasts gathered outside the ride’s snow-covered stone entrance, only to receive disappointing news. The Bobsled had a tendency to close due to rain or high humidity, which ultimately led to its early retirement. However, after testing and inspection, workers announced to the crowd’s cheers that the Alpine Bobsled would operate for a few final hours.

The Alpine Bobsled had an interesting history of relocation. Initially built in 1984 at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, it moved to Six Flags Great America in Chicago from 1989 to 1995, and finally opened at Great Escape in 1998. Wade Abbott, who rode the coaster as a teenager, described it as a unique trackless coaster, with very few of its kind in the world.

The ride featured cars designed as bobsleds for various international teams and reached a top speed of 35 miles per hour while maneuvering around curves. In about 90 seconds, the ride took passengers on a thrilling adventure. As the Alpine Bobsled faced its retirement, visitors expressed mixed emotions, feeling the loss of a piece of their youth.
