Tragic events unfolded at a Las Vegas high school earlier this month, when 17-year-old Jonathan Lewis Jr. was brutally beaten in an alley near the school. As a result of the altercation over petty theft, Lewis was subjected to a severe beating causing “non-survivable head trauma”.
After a weeklong hospitalization, Lewis passed away due to blunt-force trauma sustained during the attack, which was deemed a homicide by the Clark County Medical Examiner’s Office. The harrowing event gained widespread attention following the emergence of a shocking video depicting the violent assault shared on social media. Lieutenant Jason Johansson of the Las Vegas police described the video as portraying a “void of humanity,” noting that it shows how “10 subjects immediately swarm [Lewis], pull him to the ground and begin kicking, punching and stomping on him.”
In the wake of this devastating occurrence, eight teenagers between the ages of 13 and 17 were arrested by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department on suspicion of murder, with authorities actively working to identify additional suspects thought to be involved. The police department is pushing for the charges to be classified as adult offenses, potentially leading to a minimum of 25 years of imprisonment for the accused minors.
Following this tragic incident, Lewis’s family, devastated by the loss of their son, has spoken out against violence, emphasizing that their late son “was a hero who tried to help a smaller child who was being bullied and 15 people attacked him in cowardly violence” on a GoFundMe page dedicated to starting a foundation in his name. Despite this being a difficult period for the family, they believe in the power of peaceful coexistence and love.
