Johnson’s Start as Speaker: Experiencing an Unstoppable F5 Hurricane

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), who was recently elected, likened his first week in the role to a powerful hurricane during a press conference on Thursday. When asked about his initial experience, Johnson drew on his Louisiana roots, stating, “Well, I’m from Louisiana, so I describe everything using football or hurricane metaphors.”

Expanding on his analogy, Johnson added, “Let me tell you, this has been like an F5 hurricane. It’s been a whirlwind, but in a fantastic way.”

An F5 storm refers to the highest category of tornado on the Fujita Damage Intensity Scale, also known as an “incredible tornado,” with wind speeds ranging from 261 to 318 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Johnson’s rise to the position of Speaker was swift and unexpected. Following the removal of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) from his post on October 3, the GOP struggled for weeks to find a suitable replacement. Johnson, who had previously been relatively unknown outside of his district and the Capitol, has now found himself thrust into the spotlight, enjoying the privileges that come with the Speakership, including a personal security detail and requests for photos with tourists.

Despite the sudden ascension and perks of his new role, Johnson is already facing challenging battles ahead. He is currently pushing for a House GOP version of the White House’s emergency supplemental request, which includes aid for Israel, Ukraine, and other national security needs. Johnson has committed to moving forward on a package that focuses solely on aid for Israel, despite the White House’s threat to veto such a proposal.

The government is also facing a funding deadline of November 17, by which time all appropriations bills must be passed through both chambers of Congress and sent to the president’s desk. Alternatively, the House could pass a continuing resolution to buy more time for funding the government.
