University of Washington climate and health scientist, Kristie Ebi, described Huq as someone who always prioritized the needs of the poor and marginalized. Huq’s work aimed to highlight how climate change affects people’s lives, health, and livelihoods.
Huq co-founded the International Centre for Climate Change and Development in Dhaka and held positions at the International Institute for Environment and Development in London. He also taught at universities in England and Bangladesh. His advocacy for community-based approaches to climate change adaptation in developing countries was groundbreaking.
In 2022, Huq received the Order of the British Empire from Queen Elizabeth II for his outstanding contributions. He was widely recognized for his research and publications, being named one of the top 10 scientists in the world by the scientific journal Nature.
Harjeet Singh from Climate Action Network paid tribute to Huq, acknowledging his unwavering dedication to the impact of climate change. Huq’s advocacy for the most vulnerable populations created an unparalleled legacy.
One of Huq’s major goals was to establish a loss and damage program, funded by wealthier nations responsible for climate change, to support developing countries. While progress has been made, efforts to fully implement this program have encountered obstacles.
Huq’s influence extended to the United Nations climate negotiations, where he initiated a tradition of focusing on climate change adaptation. This tradition evolved into a multi-day event, shedding light on the importance of adapting to climate change. Huq’s charisma drew people’s attention at these negotiations.
According to Joel Smith, a former U.S. Environmental Protection Agency official, Huq’s loss leaves a void in the voice of developing countries. Smith highlighted Huq’s humor, persistence, and calmness as qualities that distinguished him.
In addition to his advocacy and research, Huq played a crucial role in mentoring young scientists from developing nations. He connected them with opportunities and fostered their growth.
Huq is survived by his widow, son, and daughter.
