Dispelling the Myth: Ukrainian Foreign Minister Proves Ukraine’s Relevance with Malta Meeting

Ukrainian Foreign Minister asserts that the recent advisors’ meeting in Malta exemplifies the strong support Ukraine has received from countries worldwide amidst the escalation in the Middle East.

The minister highlights the increased participation of nations in discussions regarding President ‘s Peace Formula over the past six months.

“In June, 15 states attended the talks in Copenhagen, followed by 42 states in Jeddah in August. And now, in Malta, we have gathered 66 states and international organizations,” Kuleba enumerates.

Kuleba emphasizes the importance of this diplomatic engagement for two significant reasons:

First, he notes the disappearance of numerous “peace” initiatives from the information landscape in the last six months, which proposed unacceptable terms for Ukraine, such as giving up territories or engaging in unfavorable exchanges. In contrast, the current discussions focus on a fair and honest Ukrainian formula that aligns with the UN Charter and key resolutions of the General Assembly.

Second, he highlights how the meeting in Malta dispels two prevailing myths: 1) the notion of declining attention towards Ukraine amidst Middle Eastern events, and 2) the belief that Ukraine has lost support from the so-called Global South. Kuleba points out that the number of participants has increased, including countries beyond Europe and North America.

The Minister affirms that there is room for everyone in the formula but no tolerance for pseudo-pacifism.

“This pragmatic document embodies the principles of the UN Charter. Ukraine continues to actively work towards its implementation and the preparation of the Global Peace Summit, where leaders will formalize agreements and proceed with their implementation,” Kuleba affirms.

Background:

  • China still did not attend the meeting of advisers on national security and foreign policy held in Malta, but Ukraine aims to host a Global Peace Summit of world leaders this year.

  • During the Malta meeting, five points were discussed from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s 10-point formula proposed last year. The topics included nuclear security, food security, energy security, the release of prisoners and deportees, and territorial integrity.
