Sikh Man, 66, Fatally Beaten in NYC Road Rage Attack: Family Seeks Hate Crime Charges
A 66-year-old Sikh man was tragically beaten to death in a road rage incident in Queens last week. The grieving family of Jasmer Singh is demanding that the alleged perpetrator be charged with a hate crime. The incident occurred when Singh and his wife were returning home from a doctor’s appointment in Kew Gardens on Thursday afternoon. After a minor collision, the confrontation turned deadly, resulting in the arrest of Gilbert Augustin, 30, the following day. Augustin is currently facing charges including manslaughter, assault, and aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, according to authorities.
According to a witness, moments after the collision between Singh’s Toyota and Augustin’s Ford Mustang, a male voice was heard saying “No police,” followed by the alleged attacker reaching into Singh’s car and forcibly taking his cell phone. Singh exited his vehicle and confronted Augustin, leading to an argument. Eventually, Singh managed to retrieve his phone, but the altercation didn’t end there. As Singh returned to his car, Augustin allegedly struck him three times in the head and face, causing a severe brain injury.
Singh, a practicing Sikh who wore a turban, was rushed to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he tragically passed away the following day due to the extent of his injuries. The grieving family describes Singh as an educated and noble individual who had been preparing for a trip to his native India with his wife.
Singh’s son, referred to as Mr. Multani, has called for hate crime charges against Augustin, stating that his father was targeted due to his appearance and the attacker’s intensity was unwarranted. Multani expressed his father’s innocence and emphasized his desire for justice. Singh’s wife, deeply traumatized by the incident, was left with a lasting negative impression.
Augustin fled the scene immediately after the attack, but was later apprehended. At his arraignment, Judge Danielle Hartman ordered him to be held without bail. He is scheduled to appear again in Queens Criminal Court on Thursday.
Following the tragic incident, Mayor Eric Adams extended his condolences to the Sikh community and pledged to reject the hatred that claimed Singh’s life. He reassured the Sikh community that they have the support and protection of the city.
