Reilly announced to the crowd that it was Snoop Dogg’s special day, and Snoop proceeded to light up a joint with the lit candles on the cake. The crowd joined Ferrell and Reilly in singing “Happy Birthday,” and Snoop blew out the candles.
This reunion comes after a slight disagreement over the casting of the role of Jerry Buss in HBO’s sports drama series, Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty. Will Ferrell had expressed interest in playing the role but was ultimately passed over for Michael Shannon. Despite this, Ferrell was supportive of the casting choice. However, Shannon ended up leaving the production, and John C. Reilly was chosen as a replacement just a week before shooting began.
Snoop Dogg shared a backstage photo of the surprise moment with Ferrell and Reilly on Instagram, expressing his gratitude. Ferrell and Reilly have a long history of collaboration, including their work together in Talladega Nights: The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby (2006), Holmes & Watson (2018), and the comedy film Step Brothers (2008).
Amidst the casting disagreement, Adam McKay, Ferrell’s producing partner and friend, admitted to mishandling the situation by not personally informing Ferrell of the casting decision. This led to some tension between the two, but Reilly, wanting to maintain his friendships with both men, decided not to get involved in the conflict.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty aired for two seasons on HBO, covering the Showtime Lakers era. The series received positive reviews during its run but was ultimately not renewed for a third season.
