Emily Blunt apologizes for insensitive comment in rediscovered interview
The Devil Wears Prada star faces backlash for calling waitress “enormous”
“I just need to address this head-on, as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12 years ago,” Emily Blunt reveals in an exclusive statement to PEOPLE. “I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”
She further expresses, “I’ve always prided myself on being considerate and never intending to upset anyone, so I cannot fathom why I made such a comment in that moment. It goes against everything I believe in. Nevertheless, I take full responsibility for what I said and apologize for any pain caused. I should have known better at the time.”
During the interview, Emily Blunt reflects on an incident at a Chili’s restaurant while filming her movie Looper. The comment made by Blunt drew criticism and controversy causing her to confront the issue and apologize.
“Well, the girl who was serving me was enormous,” Blunt explains, adding, “I believe she received complimentary meals at Chili’s.”
Host Jonathan Ross responds, “There’s nothing wrong with that.”
Blunt goes on to share how the waitress recognized her and engaged in an excited conversation about the movie, yet she couldn’t believe the film was called Looper.
“She asked, ‘Are y’all shooting a movie here?'” Blunt recalls in her Southern accent. “I replied, ‘Yeah, I’m filming a movie called Looper.’ And she said, ‘Looper?’ And I replied, ‘Yes.’ And she said, ‘Y’all just made that up.'”
Looper, a thrilling action film directed by Rian Johnson, also starred Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Paul Dano.
