Apple is reportedly developing a new HomePod with a screen, and leaked images circulating online offer an exclusive sneak peek into the innovative smart speaker.
The image above showcases a HomePod of similar dimensions to the second-generation model released earlier this year. However, it features an operative LCD display on top.
A device collector and leaker known as “Kosutami” shared the image, having previously disseminated accurate pre-release details about Apple’s FineWoven accessories, prototypes like the MagSafe chargers, and AirPods in various color options.
Earlier today, Kosutami also divulged images of component parts allegedly belonging to a prototype HomePod. These parts exhibited a sizable touch screen sensor, clearly larger than the existing HomePod panel.
Additionally, 9to5Mac confirms the authenticity of these images through its own sources. The prototype, codenamed B720, is currently in active development by Apple, rather than being just an experimental concept.
According to 9to5Mac, the assembled HomePod’s display panel showcases the LcdUTest app—an internal tool utilized by engineers to assess the new display. The publication suggests that Apple is rewriting apps like Apple Music and Apple Podcasts to make them compatible with the forthcoming display. When music or a podcast is playing, the display may exhibit a blurred animation based on the album art’s colors and possibly display essential notifications.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman initially hinted in 2021 that Apple is conceiving HomePods with displays and cameras. Furthermore, Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo asserted earlier this year that a redesigned HomePod with a 7-inch display is slated for release in the first half of 2024.
Long-term projections indicate that Apple is reevaluating its smart home strategy and actively developing a combined Apple TV and HomePod device, as well as a HomePod equipped with a screen mounted on a robotic arm, as reported by Gurman.
