Honda Partners with Toronto Pearson Airport to Test Autonomous Work Vehicle
In March, Honda announced its search for partners to test its innovative rolling electric platform designed to enhance workforce productivity and support repetitive tasks. Now, the Autonomous Work Vehicle (AWV) has been given inspection duties at Toronto Pearson Airport.
The AWV, introduced in 2018, was initially developed to transport heavy materials on construction sites, assist emergency personnel, and aid in various agricultural and maintenance tasks. After successful field tests with multiple prototypes, Honda is now focusing on commercialization. To explore potential use scenarios at a working airport, Honda has collaborated with the Greater Toronto Airports Authority, Cisco Canada, Genwave Technologies, Illuminex AI, and Eagle Aerospace.
Jason VanBuren, a representative from Honda, stated, “Our Honda Autonomous Work Vehicle has proven its ability to improve worksite efficiencies and safety through previous field tests. We are excited to take the next step and explore real-world applications with airfield operators. By understanding the needs of airport authorities, we can streamline operations, enhance safety performance, and contribute to airfield environmental sustainability goals.”
The current prototype of the AWV measures 1,300 x 3,025 x 2,052 mm (51 x 119 x 81 in) and is equipped with a sensor suite consisting of vision cameras, radar, LiDAR, and GPS. With a top speed of 16 km/h (10 mph), the vehicle can be operated remotely or autonomously using Honda’s tablet-based software. It has a per-charge range of up to 45 km (~28 miles) and can be fully recharged in approximately 6 hours via a 120-V power connection.
The AWV has a platform bed capable of carrying up to 399 kg (880 lb), making it ideal for transporting equipment within an airport to support the human workforce. Additionally, it has a towing capacity of up to 750 kg (1,653 lb), allowing it to perform tasks such as grass mowing, debris removal on runways, and baggage cart transportation.
