X, the popular social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has recently announced an innovative program aimed at combating spam and fake accounts on its website. In an effort to achieve this, X is currently testing a new initiative called “Not A Bot,” which requires new unverified accounts to pay a nominal fee of $1 per month for an annual subscription in order to post and engage with others on the platform.
Upon payment of the fee, new users will gain access to a range of actions, including posting content, liking posts, replying, reposting, quoting other accounts, and bookmarking posts. On the other hand, users who choose not to participate in the program will still be able to take limited actions, such as reading posts, watching videos, and following accounts.
As of now, this program is being tested in New Zealand and the Philippines, and it will not affect existing users. According to X’s support team, this test is designed to further strengthen their ongoing efforts to combat spam, manipulation, and bot activity on the platform, while maintaining accessibility through a modest subscription fee that helps cover costs rather than generating profits. They believe that subscription options have been the most effective solution at scale.
This recent development comes roughly a year after entrepreneur Elon Musk acquired the platform for a staggering $44 billion. Since then, X has gone through a series of significant changes, including a revamp of its verification system and limits on the visibility of posts and direct messages for users.
