Prime Minister Justin Trudeau highlighted a significant surge in antisemitism in Canada due to the recent conflict between Hamas and Israel.
During a conference on fighting antisemitism, Trudeau expressed concern over the rise of antisemitism since the conflict began. He stated that there had been a steady increase even before the current situation.
Trudeau cited examples such as a potential hate crime at a Jewish high school in Toronto, fears among individuals visiting synagogues, and the use of heated online rhetoric to illustrate the growing antisemitism in Canada.
As a response to the situation, Toronto police arrested three men who had made threats at the Community Hebrew Academy. Additionally, law enforcement has increased patrols around Jewish cultural centers, synagogues, Muslim mosques, and other places of worship.
Trudeau firmly condemned Hamas and expressed his support for Israel’s right to self-defense, while emphasizing that Hamas does not represent the Palestinian people or their aspirations. He asserted that Hamas does not speak for Muslim or Arab communities and does not represent the better future that Palestinians and their children deserve.
In the recent conflict, Hamas launched an attack on southern Israeli communities, resulting in the deaths of 1,300 people and the abduction of around 200 hostages into the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip.
Israel has responded by conducting airstrikes in Gaza, where health authorities report that at least 3,000 people have been killed. A hospital attack on Tuesday claimed the lives of 500 Palestinians, with Israeli and Palestinian officials blaming each other.
