The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the second-largest teacher’s union in the U.S., has partnered with GPTZero, a company specializing in detecting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by students for their homework. The collaboration aims to help educators better understand and monitor students’ reliance on AI technology.
Randi Weingarten, the president of AFT, believes that AI has a place in the classroom if privacy and security measures are in place. She stated, “ChatGPT can be a valuable supplement to educators as long as proper guardrails are implemented.”
Collaborating with AI
Weingarten emphasizes the importance of working with AI instead of against it. She acknowledges the potential of AI in education and wants to avoid repeating past negative transitions caused by technological advancements.
GPTZero, co-founded by Edward Tian, a recent Princeton graduate, offers tools for teachers and students alike. Weingarten believes these tools can enhance collaboration between educators and generative AI to benefit both parties.
While free versions of GPTZero products are available, AFT pays for access to more tailored AI detection and certification tools.
Responsible AI Use
GPTZero, originally developed to scan text for AI input, now provides tools for students to certify their content as human and openly disclose their use of AI. Tian emphasizes the goal of demonstrating that using AI in education does not have to be adversarial.
Tian’s ultimate aim is to empower teachers and students to responsibly leverage cutting-edge AI technologies while mitigating potential harm. Weingarten sees AI as a way to reduce administrative burdens for educators and improve the efficiency of tasks such as lesson planning.
