JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson revealed that Trevor Lawrence is currently considered day-to-day due to a left knee injury, but declined to provide further details regarding the injury or the possibility of Lawrence’s participation in the upcoming Thursday night game against the Saints.
Pederson mentioned that Lawrence’s knee is sore but has shown improvement on Monday. Depending on how Lawrence’s knee responds, he could potentially split first-team practice reps with backup quarterback C.J. Beathard throughout the week.
An MRI was conducted on Lawrence’s knee on Monday; however, Pederson admitted to being unaware of the specific results or if there were any strained ligaments.
“You’d have to talk Ferg [vice president of player health and performance Jeff Ferguson],” said Pederson. “That’s out of my jurisdiction.”
According to a league source, Lawrence’s knee injury was described as a “sprain” that ESPN’s Adam Schefter deemed insignificant.
The injury occurred during a third-and-7 play from the Indianapolis 16-yard line in the Jaguars’ recent 37-20 victory over the Colts at EverBank Stadium. Lawrence executed a fake pitch to the right to Travis Etienne Jr., rolled to the left, and was pursued by Colts defensive end Samson Ebukam before being tackled at the 33-yard line.
Immediately after the play, Lawrence clutched his left knee and remained on the ground briefly. He then walked off the field and was evaluated by team physician Kevin Kaplan on the sideline. Despite not wearing a wrap or brace during the postgame handshake and news conference, Lawrence was observed with a wrap on his left leg while leaving the stadium on Sunday evening.
The Jaguars (4-2) are scheduled for a walk-through on Monday, followed by practices on Tuesday and Wednesday before departing for New Orleans. Pederson mentioned the possibility of Beathard receiving some first-team snaps.
“If Trevor’s sore,” Pederson explained. “We’ve done this before. We did last year [when Lawrence suffered a toe injury against Detroit]. C.J. took the Wednesday reps and then Trevor took the rest of the week and was ready to play in the game.”
Lawrence has never missed a start in his career. Beathard, on the other hand, has not started a game since the final two weeks of the 2020 season with the 49ers and holds a 2-10 record as a starter. He joined the Jaguars in the subsequent offseason and has appeared in eight games, completing 11-of-15 passes for 77 yards with one interception.
In addition to Lawrence, Pederson mentioned that right guard Brandon Scherff (ankle), left guard Walker Little (knee), and receiver Zay Jones (knee) are all considered day-to-day, possibly leaving the Jaguars without four offensive starters on Thursday if they are unable to play.
Pederson also stated that cornerback Tyson Campbell (hamstring) is unlikely to participate in the game against the Saints (3-3). The Jaguars have yet to secure a victory at the Caesars Superdome, currently holding an 0-3 record.
