Unveiling the Spotlight: GM’s Cruise Division Faces Investigation and Concerns over Pedestrian Injuries

In addition to Tesla, General Motors’ Cruise autonomous vehicle division is also facing scrutiny over its self-driving cars. The US regulators have launched an investigation into reports that Cruise vehicles may not have taken proper precautions around pedestrians on roadways. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is concerned about instances where the automated driving system equipped vehicles have approached or entered roadways where pedestrians are present, including crosswalks. These incidents could potentially lead to severe injuries or fatalities.

The NHTSA’s Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has reported two incidents of pedestrian injuries involving Cruise vehicles and has identified two additional incidents from publicly posted videos. The total number of relevant pedestrian incidents is currently unknown. The ODI initiated an investigation on Monday to assess the scope and severity of the issue, including any driving policies and performance factors that may relate to the accidents and to evaluate the potential safety risks.

Cruise spokesperson, Hannah Lindow, defended the company’s safety record. In a statement, Lindow stated, “Cruise’s safety record over 5 million miles continues to outperform comparable human drivers at a time when pedestrian injuries and deaths are at an all-time high.” Lindow also confirmed that Cruise maintains regular communication with NHTSA and cooperates fully with their requests for information, whether associated with an investigation or not.
