MANILA, Philippines—Petro Gazz made a powerful debut under new coach Timmy Sto. Tomas, sweeping debuting Galeries in the 2023 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference at Smart Araneta Coliseum on Tuesday evening.
Grethcel Soltones led the Angels with an impressive 19 points, along with 14 digs and 10 receptions. Petro Gazz faced strong resistance from the newest PVL team in the last two sets, but ultimately secured victory after an hour and 34 minutes.
“Coach Timmy is still guiding us through a lot of things that we need to improve on. Volleyball should be simple, but we made it difficult for ourselves,” said Soltones, who contributed 17 attacks, one ace, and a block.
After dominating the first set, the Angels had to rally from a 20-22 deficit in the second set. Dimdim Pacres, who came off the bench, provided a spark for the Highrisers. Despite allowing Petro Gazz to reach set point at 24-23, Pacres managed to save a point before Carly Hernandez missed her serve. Ranya Musa then sealed the set with a decisive hit, giving the Angels a 2-0 advantage.
The Angels maintained their lead in the third set with a 17-10 margin, but the Highrisers fought back with Roma Joy Doromal and Audrey Paran. They narrowed the gap to three points at 23-20. However, Marian Buitre halted their comeback, reaching match point at 24-20, before Anne Esguerra and Paran saved two points.
Despite the Highrisers’ efforts, Soltones ended the game with a massive kill.
“I’m very happy that we were able to secure the win despite facing difficulties in the second and third sets. The team stepped up in the latter part of the match,” said Sto. Tomas.
Aiza Maizo-Pontillas also contributed 10 points, while Jonah Sabete and KC Galdones added 10 markers each. Setter Djanel Cheng showcased her skills with 15 excellent sets.
No player from Galeries scored in double figures, with Audrey Paran leading the team with eight points. Roma Joy Doromal, Anne Esguerra, and Raprap Aguilar added seven markers each.
