In a shocking incident of road rage on Ortega Highway back in 2021, a Mission Viejo resident targeted an off-duty San Bernardino police officer and now faces a three-year prison sentence. The culprit, Keith Frederick Prante, aged 36, pleaded guilty to charges of shooting at a vehicle and possessing a loaded firearm as a prohibited person.
The dramatic event unfolded on February 20, 2021, at approximately 7:45 p.m. as the officer traveled east on Ortega Highway, also known as Highway 74. An aggressive motorist began tailing him, relentlessly honking his horn, flashing headlights, and engaging in dangerous driving behavior, as reported by the California Highway Patrol.
Eventually, the motorist crossed into oncoming lanes, cutting in front of the officer’s vehicle just west of Decker Canyon Road. Shockingly, the perpetrator opened fire on the officer from this position and quickly fled in the opposite direction. Fortunately, no one sustained injuries during the incident.
The quick-thinking officer managed to note down the gunman’s license plate, leading to the subsequent arrest of Prante the following day. Investigations have revealed that there was no prior connection between the officer and the assailant.
