Manuel “Jun” Urbano Jr., a popular comedian known for his alter ego Mr. Shooli, recently received the prestigious Gawad Plaridel for his outstanding work in the media industry. This award, presented by the University of the Philippines System, recognizes Filipino media practitioners who have excelled in their field and demonstrated a high level of professional integrity in the interest of public service.
Urbano, dressed as Mr. Shooli during the awards ceremony, explained that his alter ego allows him to speak his mind in a way that he may not be able to as himself. With humor and wit, his acceptance speech was both entertaining and thought-provoking.
Before receiving the award, Urbano shared, “Tomorrow, my speech will make Filipinos feel guilty. I will address the issues of corruption and extra judicial killings in our government. I will challenge the youth to use their knowledge to improve our country.”
During his speech, Urbano reminisced about a time in the 1950s when he believed that Filipinos were the best people in Southeast Asia. He highlighted the country’s economic success, its role as a top exporter of sugar and rice, and its reputation as a hub for education.
However, Urbano expressed disappointment with the current state of affairs. He questioned what happened to the Philippines and urged Filipinos to reclaim the glory of their nation.
Nicanor Tiongson, a critic and professor, recommended Urbano for the Gawad Plaridel. Urbano expressed his surprise and gratitude for the recognition, stating that he simply enjoys making funny comments on politics and other issues, a trait he says he inherited from his father, National Artist for Film Manuel Conde.
Ricky Lee, another National Artist for Film and a previous Gawad Plaridel recipient, commended Urbano and emphasized the importance of recognizing comedians for their biting and thought-provoking commentary. Lee encouraged Urbano to continue sharing his thoughts through his YouTube channel, which has gained a substantial following.
Despite his success, Urbano admits to feeling discouraged at times by the content creators on YouTube who spread negativity and lack his level of wit and insight. Urbano’s intention in creating content as Mr. Shooli is to address serious subjects in a comical way, but he recognizes that not everyone appreciates satire. Nevertheless, he has friends who continue to support and encourage him to continue his vlog.
Urbano, who is also a writer and director, was presented with the Gawad Plaridel trophy for his contributions to TV, advertising, and film. The trophy was created by renowned National Artist for Sculpture Napoleon V. Abueva. Since its establishment in 2004, the Gawad Plaridel has honored 15 exceptional individuals in various media fields.
