Ex-Trump Org. CFO Testifies in Fraud Trial
Allan Weisselberg, the former CFO of the Trump Organization, has taken the stand in the civil fraud trial against Donald Trump and his company. This development comes after it was announced that Michael Cohen, Trump’s former lawyer and “fixer,” would not be able to testify due to a medical issue.
According to Cohen’s statement to CBS News, “Unfortunately I need to attend to a pre-existing medical condition that impedes my ability to testify this upcoming week. Rest assured, I will testify at the earliest opportunity.”
Cohen’s testimony in 2019, where he alleged that Trump falsely inflated his wealth, sparked investigations by both the New York Attorney General Letitia James and the Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. These investigations led to the current civil and criminal trials.
Lawyers for both sides had a private discussion with the judge regarding a “scheduling issue” that arose shortly before the weekend. The details of this discussion were not publicly addressed.
Trump, who attended the first two and a half days of the trial, is expected to be present for the upcoming proceedings on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
The trial aims to recover $250 million in alleged “ill-gotten gains” and impose sanctions that would severely limit Trump’s business activities in New York.
So far, the court has heard from three current and former Trump Organization executives, the company’s accountant, and a banker involved in approving loans. Testimony on Friday revealed exhibits showing executives trying to justify inflating valuations, including applying a “premium for presidential property” to certain assets.
