The 24th annual Newport Beach Film Festival will feature the premiere of Colin Best’s first feature film on Saturday evening. Best, a Newport Beach native, expressed his excitement about the screening, stating, “I grew up in Newport Beach and then moved to Laguna Beach with my wife and two daughters 10 years ago.”
Despite being a Newport Beach native, Best made his debut movie during the coldest winter in Switzerland in 30 years. He specifically chose Switzerland due to its breathtaking landscape, which provided a striking contrast to the violence portrayed in his surrealistic, noir thriller filmed in black and white. Stuart Reid stars as the Man in Gray who embarks on a mission to deliver a mysterious suitcase for a secretive organization.
Best expressed his gratitude towards Reid, who endured zero degree temperatures while wearing a business suit and having the case chained to his wrist throughout the film. According to Best, “I offered the case to him after filming, and he said, ‘No, I’m good.'” The film was shot using a Red digital camera, and various lenses were used to give it a filmic quality.
The Man in Gray represents a universal questioning soldier battling drug addiction and alcoholism, adding depth to the character. To support a good cause, Best partnered with the Action Alliance Foundation to raise awareness about their services for the homeless community in the county.
Best firmly believes in second chances, exemplified by his personal experience with an employee at his hotel in Ireland who had 17 offenses but became an exceptional worker. In his documentary “The Black Jacket,” Best showcased rival gang members coming together through a class taught by a former Black Panther to promote peace.
Despite the morally ambiguous nature of the protagonist in “Silver Case,” Best emphasizes that the character demonstrates moments of mercy. The film explores themes of disease and addiction, which resonate with collaborators who have faced similar struggles.
During the screening of Best’s film, Action Alliance Vice President Joe Melican will speak about the organization’s new program, Project Hope, which provides shelter for homeless individuals striving for sobriety. The premiere will take place at Big Newport 4, 300 Newport Center Drive, at 7:30 p.m. It will also be shown on Wednesday at Triangle 5, 1870 Harbor Blvd., Costa Mesa, at 5:30 p.m. The Newport Beach Film Festival showcases approximately 300 films from 50 countries and runs until October 19th. Screenings are held at various theaters in Newport Beach, including THE LOT at Fashion Island, Regal’s Big Edwards Newport, and Starlight Cinemas.
