A judge ruled on Friday that the operator of a Riverside child daycare facility accused of sexually assaulting two girls will stand trial on multiple counts of lewd acts on a child and other offenses.
54-year-old Ladislao Diaz Cuevas was arrested in February after an investigation by the Riverside Police Department.
After a preliminary hearing, Judge Gary Polk determined that there was enough evidence to proceed with a trial. Cuevas will face charges including five counts of lewd acts on a child under 14 years old, two counts of sexual penetration with a foreign object, and an allegation of targeting multiple victims in a sex crime.
The post-preliminary hearing arraignment is scheduled for October 27th at the Riverside Hall of Justice. Cuevas’ bail remains set at $1 million.
Cuevas is currently incarcerated at the nearby Robert Presley Jail.
According to Riverside police Officer Ryan Railsback, the investigation began after detectives received information in January about Cuevas’ alleged inappropriate contact with a girl approximately three years ago.
During the investigation, a second victim came forward in December 2022 with similar allegations, Railsback revealed.
The two children involved have been identified as Jane Does, but their ages have not been disclosed.
Cuevas operated the Little Steps Family Daycare in the La Sierra Hills area, located in the 11000 block of Oriole Drive, according to the police spokesperson.
The specific details of the alleged assaults have not been disclosed.
Cuevas does not have any previous felony convictions in Riverside County.
